I am Alvilde Jerpseth (b. 1992), a self-taught painter from Oslo, based in Palermo, Italy. I started painting in 2021–22 and work with figurative painting characterized by stoic figures and an expressionistic use of color.
My artistic practice is rooted in figurative painting and driven by an interest in simplification, symbolism, and color as both an emotional and structural force. I create scenes populated by stoic figures set in a cosmic, non-realistic universe. Through bold primary colors, flat shapes, and deliberate distortions, I reinterpret reality through imagination, allowing the paintings to exist in a space between the familiar and the mythical.
Although my work is informed by modernist and expressionist painting, I approach these references not as an homage, but as tools to explore how historical painterly strategies can be reactivated in a contemporary context.
Themes such as femininity, intimacy, duality and human presence recur in my work, often expressed through restrained gestures and ambiguous relationships between figures. The tension between control and expression is central to my process, as is the balance between formal clarity and emotional openness, which leaves room for the viewer's imagination.
I have a master's degree in design from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) and have presented work in solo and group exhibitions in Oslo, Bergen, Paris, Berlin and Palermo.
